Your holiday pep talk... because festive people live longer, better lives.
Get your ass up and spread some holiday cheer, please.
I think festive people live longer. I’ve shared this opinion loudly every December for 3 years!
I removed the paywall from my take here so that the masses can really hear the truth, you know?
But I think people don’t love this take in reality, or embrace it, at least, because— no offense!— most people are not festive at all. Most people do not make the time or do the work to be festive! I would love to be proven wrong. But I think it’s as simple as the fact that like anything, being festive takes… work.
I’ll explain! It always starts with the best of intentions or admirable inspiration— maybe Pinterest, Instagram, maybe a neighbor’s decorations? I think a lot of people aspire to do festive things or holiday-y things— to bake the cookie box, to make the DIY ornaments or decorations, to go see the tree, to think ahead on the gifting or do something thoughtful for the doorman or the postman or your coworkers— and then things fall apart when the realization hits that doing any of those things, even just one of them… is work. They require some modicum of planning ahead, preparing, time spent. And you are already tired, stretched thin, and perhaps overwhelmed.

It’s worthwhile work, by the way. But it really doesn’t feel that way a lot of the time in the moment! I really get it. The last few weeks I worked my ass off on a Christmas cookie box. To make it realistic, I scaled wayyyyy back on what I wanted to do and the number of people I wanted to gift it to! Yes, Zoe, I thought. This year we’re setting realistic goals and releasing the idea that this will be a perfect effort. We will not get to go as big as we want, but that’s okay! Because we will stay sane during the process.
Haha! Haha! Haha! Reader, you know what they say about the best of intentions…
